Valparola austro-hungarian cemetery

Hike near San Cassiano to the Valparola mountain hut and the austro-hungarian cemetery Valparola

Below the Valparola pass, the Valparola military cemetery commemorates the mountain warfare of the first world war that resulted in many losses. From San Cassiano / Sciare a beautiful hike leads across the Valparola mountain hut to this contemplative forest cemetery, where Austro-Hungarian and German soldiers found their final resting place.

Directions to the Valparola austro-hungarian cemetery

The hike to the Valparola military cemetery begins at the large Sciare car park, located between San Cassiano and the Valparola pass, which can also be reached by public bus.

On the opposite side of the road, hiking trail no. 24B points the way towards the mountain hut. At first, it leads almost level through meadows with a view and covered with single trees.

After crossing the small Col dai Furnes stream, forest path no. 18 branches off to the left. It leads in a pleasant ascent to the idyllic Valparola mountain hut, which invites you in the middle of an idyllic clearing for an enjoyable break. In the rustic mountain hut, homemade bread, yogurt, cheese and curd cheese are on the menu in addition to traditional dishes.

From the Valparola mountain hut, the gently ascending forest path continues to wind its way towards the Valparola pass. After a good quarter of an hour of steady hiking, it joins the pass road, which it follows upwards on the opposite side of the road.

A little later, the wide path to the nearby Valparola austro-hungarian cemetery branches off to the left. The tranquil forest cemetery was built during the fighting in June 1916. At that time it was divided by a front road into a smaller German and a larger Austro-Hungarian area. In the small chapel, built of pine wood, a notice gives a small insight into the history of the now renovated cemetery, which was still in a desolate condition at the beginning of the 80s.

The way back from the Valparola austro-hungarian cemetery is the same as the way there.
