Route description Locatelli mountain hut Three Peaks of Lavaredo

The starting point of this strenuous but extremely rewarding hike to the Three Peaks of Lavaredo is the hikers' parking lot in the Val di Landro valley opposite the hotel "Drei-Zinnen-Blick", which can be reached by taking the Dobbiaco-Cortina road.

Following the marking n. 102, a forest path, at first almost flat, then slightly ascending, leads along the Rienza river through the valley of the same name.

At the end of the valley, the wide path leads to a narrower path. Gradually steepening, this path winds through the Rienza valley and through rocky, now quite steep terrain in the direction of Pian da Rin / Rienzboden, where several rivulets join to form the Rienza river.

In the immediate vicinity of the graceful Three Peaks of Lavaredo, you hike up on now narrow, steadily ascending paths through picturesque mountain meadows to the rifugio Locatelli at the Three Peaks of Lavaredo at 2,405 m above sea level, where up to 2,000 visitors come daily during the summer months.

The way back from the Three Peaks of Lavaredo is the same as on the way there.

Where once echoed the cannon thunder of the first world war...

Interesting details about the Three Peaks of Lavaredo

The area around the Three Peaks of Lavaredo was the scene of cruel battles in rock and ice during the first world war. For more than two years, an unspeakably cruel and depriving war of position raged here, claiming numerous lives and transforming the picturesque mountain world into a crude frontline landscape: Trenches were dug, tunnels were driven into the rocks, shelters and emplacements were built for thousands of soldiers, kilometers of roads were laid out and tunnels were bored into the rocks in order to blow up summits and high ground. The traces left by the war here are still visible today....

Even in the 70's scrap metal collectors came to the Three Peaks of Lavaredo area to search the area. They found rich booty...

By the way, the memorial chapel near the Locatelli mountain hut at the Three Peaks of Lavaredo commemorates those who died in the first world war.
