Dolce Vita on lake Garda

Route description cycle way Mori Torbole

Our bike tour starts in the small town of Mori, situated between Rovereto and Riva del Garda.

In the center of Mori you take the cycle way coming from the Val d'Adige valley or Rovereto, which first leads out of the town. It then follows the main road 240 to the peaceful biotope of lake Loppio, which was drained in the 1950s for the construction of an underground canal between the river Adige and lake Garda. In the meantime it has filled up with water again and is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna.

Leaving the biotope behind, the bike path continues to the passo San Giovanni. Now begins the sometimes steep descent to Torbole, for which several options open up: we choose the cycle way through Nago and thus reach the fortification of the same name, which the Habsburgs built in the mid-19th century near the former border with Italy. Here a picturesque view of northern lake Garda, Monte Brione and the small town of Riva del Garda behind it opens up.

Following the steep road down, you reach the once sleepy fisher village of Torbole, now transformed into a veritable eldorado for water sports enthusiasts.

The return trip from Torbole to Mori follows the outward route, which is now quite steep until Nago. Behind the passo San Giovanni you cycle back to the starting point almost flat or with slight ups and downs.

Details about Torbole Mori cycle way

This bike tour follows a section of the old narrow-gauge railroad MAR (Mori-Arco-Riva), which ran here from 1891 until its closure in 1936. In the beginning it was built mainly for the fashionable tourists who came to Arco and Riva to take a vacation: Since Mori was connected to the Brennero railway, they could now travel directly and comfortably from here to their spa domicile.

A little below the forte di Nago there is a good view of the so-called "Marmitte dei Giganti" (pots of the giants). These are cavities that the meltwater washed out of the soft limestone in the period 70,000-10,000 years ago. The people found another explanation for the strange shapes: It is said that giants once drank from the gigantic "pots"... This, by the way, is where the name of these ice-age relics comes from.
